Hillsborough boasts an impressive summer of iconic real estate closings at $15,000,000+. Peninsula real estate sales of $15,000,000+ are more typically associated with Atherton or Woodside. But this summer evidenced top-flight buyers on the Peninsula gravitating to Hillsborough’s singular panache and proximity to SFO, San Francisco, and Silicon Valley.
835 Chiltern Road, an Elizabethan castle on 6+ acres, closed escrow on August 18 at an undisclosed sale price. Listing price at the time of the sale was $28,800,000. The truly museum-caliber compound last sold in the frothy Dot-Com era in March of Year 2000 for $37,500,000 per county records. The main house spans approx. 36,000 feet, plus a separate guest house. Historically, this stunning tapestry of gothic stone, turrets, parapets, and chimney stacks, was built in the 1920s by lumber and oil millionaire Arthur Dale King. Three houses originally stood on the six-acre property. Also selling this summer in Hillsborough real estate was the Tudor mansion at 350 West Santa Inez Avenue, which encompasses nearly 4 acres and traded at $16,200,000 per county records. Last but not least, “House on Hill” the landmark Tobin Clark Estate on Verbalee Lane has finally closed escrow at $22,800,000. The 35,000 sq. ft. Cotswold manor, once the only house commanding today's Tobin Clark subdivision of Hillsborough, was marketed as high as $45,000,000 tracing back to 2001. Famed for entertaining Presidents and dignitaries, the stone-clad piece de resistance (pictured above) has now finally changed hands reportedly to an overseas investor. The original stone gateposts that once marked the driveway still stand on Tournament Drive.
