Gardner Dailey: Birth of the Modern

"Perhaps no other architect had a bigger impact on transitioning beyond 1920s Revival into the realms of a new modern expression..."

SOLD in ONE WEEK! Now Pending, my listing at 1802 Floribunda could be considered the "Birth of the Modern," 80 years before the Modern Farmhouse proliferated across suburban landscapes. While today's Modern Farmhouse remains en vogue, Floribunda's architectural design by legendary Gardner Dailey stands a better chance to be revered into the next century. In the mid to late 1930s, the Dailey vernacular broke new ground with a distinct departure from the heavily ornamented European Revivals of the 1920s and early 1930s. Where the 1920s Revivals oozed of lyrical Spanish Colonials and hearty Tudors, Dailey was pioneering a modern genre of clean lines, effortless indoor/outdoor flow, and uncommonly tall windows and doors that brought the gardens inside. And the result: a true functionality of "home as canvas," where the grandeur of a European villa met the sleek elements of a new age. For 1802 Floribunda, I've called it "Regency Moderné," that fluent meeting of classicism and contemporary.  This particular example listed at $12,800,000 happened to occupy Hillsborough's hallowed Golf Course Corridor, a very rare sliver of estates adjacent to the fairways of the Burlingame Country Club.

PENDING: 1802 Floribunda Avenue, Hillsborough. Offered at $12,800,000. 7 days on Market. 6,655 sq. ft. mostly one level layout on a .825 Acre Flat Lot adjacent to golf course.  Designed in 1939 by architect Gardner Dailey.
